What To Do In Early Labour
We all know how it goes in the movies - mom’s water spontaneously breaks, she’s whisked away to the hospital, rushed to labour + delivery, cut to screaming + pushing + chaos, and 3 minutes later baby is magically in her arms.
But let’s take it back a few steps - yes baby’s can come fast, but oftentimes they take their time. Although it can be a sprint, more often labour is a marathon. And every runner knows you don’t start your marathon at top speed!
So what can you do while baby’s getting ready to make their arrival? Here are a few things to help you pass the time + support your body during early labour.
Go for a Walk
Fresh air + movement is good all the time, but in early labour, it can really help to move things along. It’s important here to go slow, take breaks when needed, and rest - labour can be a long process so you want to balance between keeping the body up + moving (helping baby to descend) and ensuring that you don’t burn out early.
Practice Meditation + Breathwork
Early labour is a great time to settle into the rhythm of your birth experience. If you practice meditation or breathwork, now is a great time to find some quiet, sit with your breath, and invite calm to wash over you.
Put on Calm Music or Affirmations
Another way to help you to settle in is to put on some calming music (I recommend taking time in pregnancy to make a playlist so it’s good to go!) or turn on some affirmations (don’t have any? Youtube has tons!).
Go For a Last Minute Appointment
I’m thinking a quick visit with your chiropractor, massage therapist or accupuntirst - someone who can support this stage of labour + provide you with an opportunity to relax (as much as possible!) and support your body for the journey ahead.
Relax as Much as You Can
Run a warm bath, put on your favourite movie, have a nap - it’s up to you! Whatever you choose, try to slow down and give your body the rest it needs to get you through your birth experience.
However you choose to spend the minutes + hours leading up to your sweet baby’s arrival, I hope you find comfort, peace + ease.
Sending you love + light
